Treatment
Thinking about the costume
Today I looked at costumes on Pinterest to have an ideea about what we are looking for as a group and also think ahead about how to get the clothes that we want.
After talking to my group about what I found, they told me they really like the white dress and the face net accessory. I then thought about how we would get a material like that, and I decided I will create the accessory in the textiles department in our school as I already know how to sew.
Music video analysis
I choose as a source of inspiration “Summertime Sadness” by Lana del Rey.
This is a video which is very similar to what we want to do: the story of a relationship between two girls and snapshots of their past and their connection. Most of the shots in this music video are done in the studio which is really good to have as a reference as we are limited to film everything is the studio.
Some of the shots in this video are very easy to do: slow motion shot of the singer posing in a cloud of smoke. They also used a video projector which I think it’s a very easy way to obtain some interesting shots that will captivate everyone’s attention.
In most of the shots the two girls are filmed separately in order to send the impression that they are not together anymore and that the song is about their past.

who’s gonna message her
Developing performance
Style/costume - send her a reference of the space and the style of the clothes/costumes, ask her to bring some clothes
Design the space - what is it going to look like?

Workshop
Today we did a workshop where we were shown different types of lenses. We also discussed about the filming day and the placement of people in a music video in order to get a beautiful composition.
We were shown for the first time some lenses which don’t have the option to zoom in or zoom out. This is a compromise in order for the lenses to be able to film in a better quality then the lenses which can be zoomed. Each of these lenses had a number on them showing how wide or zoomed it they are (the smaller the number the wider the composition is).
We were told that depth of field is crucial in a frame and that placing each individual in a way which looks wired In reality would actually look the best through the camera lenses.
Then we had to try to place each other (4 people) in the room in order to obtain a successful composition through the camera frame. We did this a couple of times and I noticed a pattern in all the compositions that looked visually pleasing: one person in the front, quite close to the camera while the others gradually further back in the room. This way we achieved depth of field
We were also shown some artificial lightings.
This workshop helped us to have a feeling on how the shooting day will be like and understand how to communicate with the actors.
Social media research
At first I looked on a website with a list of up and coming artists and found a one with a similar style to our singer.
After that I looked on youtube for her and taped on one of her videos (“Liza”) to get her social media accounts links from the description.
After that I just searched “Zsela EP release date” and I found out she released it on the 24th of April. The next step was to look at her instagram and Twitter account and scroll until I would get to her posts around the release date. After finding the posts I started to take screenshots of the posts from 4 weeks before and after the release date. Then, I went onto Canva and created a mind map of the screenshots of the posts which I just arranged chronologically from up to down.
Doing this helped me get a better understanding on how an artist similar to the one we choose advertised her own EP for free, as social media nowadays give all artists the opportunity to be advertised regardless of their financial status. However we could argue connections do help some get out there easier then others (e.g. Dua Lipa).

Genre research part 2
Today ww all printed the snapshots that we took in the first genre research and we put them together to see what they have a=in common and why that is.
Looking at all of them Sarah said that she likes the idea of the video “Hi” by Indoors pets.
Auditions
Today we did the casting for the band members. We had four guys who actually have a band come in for the auditions and another two who knew how to play the quitar.
To get everyone together we spent a couple of days beforehand just going around the school explaining to people what our project is about and that we are trying to find a drummer, singer, guitarist and a bassist. After finding some people who play some of these instruments I created a group of the people who wanted to be casted and that we thought would be suitable. Talking on the group helped me get in contact with everybody faster.
On the audition day, we all met in the place we booked and after explaining everyone again in more detail what this is about and showing them the song we asked the ones who didn’t have their instruments on them to show us a video of them playing their instrument. The ones who had their instruments on them played for a little bit while we filmed them. After the audition, when everyone left my team and I discussed and then drew a conclusion..the guys who had their own band were the most suited fir this taking in consideration their looks and the chemistry between them as they are friends in real life and actually have a band. This would be perfect because we think that on the film day they would be comfortable with each other which automatically results into a more successful product as it will be easier to communicate and then their connection will be visible through the music video itself.

Genre research
Today I looked at up and coming artists on multiple websited such as: https://www.pastemagazine.com/music/british-bands/the-15-new-british-bands-you-need-to-know-in-2019/
By surfing the internet I found these two indie rock music which kind of have the same tone and are similar to the genre of the song we choose.
The first song I fond was played by Indoor Pets and it’s called “Hi”.
The second band I found is called Sports team and I choose to look at the song called “Kutcher”.
Then I took some screenshots of the music videos of each song and put them together onto Google Slides.Thursday, 16 September 2021
Casting
Today we were looking at casting for the song we chose (“Light Pollution”).
The band that sings this song (MAK) has four members: vocalist, guitar, bass, drums.
For the instrumentalists we need people who can actually play that specific instrument whereas for the vocalist we can choose anyone who is confident, however keeping in mind that they all have to be to some extent comfortable in front of the camera, and preferably have interesting features. Conclusion: The next task we have to do is book a shed to audition the people on the casting list.

Band camp research
As we haven’t found a song yet, today I looked on Band Camp for rock bands. I didn’t find any songs with a striking personality so I started looking into rap music as we are aiming for a up-beat song.
After a while I found the artist called Task Force which my team and I liked as the song “Music from the corner”.

Bands vs single artists
Today we had a lesson in which we talked about the difference between bands and solo artists.
Listen to the person, look at the personality rather then think about how i want thr video look like.
Bands have 1 or 2 set ups while single artist have lots.
Single artists videos are harder to film then bands because …
Maroon 5 - an example of a band where the lead singer was filmed the most in their music video because they used his looks and his personality to attract audience
One direction - boy band is the hardest
Britney Spears -

Selecting a track
Today my team and I looked at a couple of possible songs:
“Fingertips” - Alexandra Mills
Different songs from different artists at the beginning -
Female solo
Very slow and gentle which can help in some way - less material
The track dosen’t have major changes - the visual work has to not change but still engage the audience
Advice: sad/ scary music triggers people more naturally so it attracts more attention which results in more sales
The singer has personality
“Forget About It” - Eddie king
Advantage:1 view on sound cloud
Disadvantage : Voice too old so we can’t cast people from the school
Conclusion: we can’t do this song beause of the age of the singer
Call it love - Olivia White

Music video
This lesson we talked about the songs that we will choose to do a music video for. We were presented twi tipes of situations that we get to pick from: either choose someone’s music for our school and have them in the video, or choose a song that is not well known and create the music video by choosing a character that would suit that voiice the most. In the second time we were told that we have to think about the gender, ethnicity, accent, age of the artist with should somewhat match our character.
Organic ideology
We were also given a few examples of artists that are individual such as Ed Sheeran, Jorja Smith etc. They usually play the game of success in this competitive market for a long time.
Synthetic ideology
The we talked about Bands or artists who got famous through shows such as X factor, or simply audition. These bands usually are formed for a specific target audience and their sucess is usually temporary because they might not necesarlly be that talented, but they are just a magnet for attenton, views and ultimatelly money through simply their looks. An example for that would be the Spice Girls.
